Musical Moments BY KIMBERLY GRAY The Savannah Music Festival was originally created to enhance cultural tourism in the Savannah/Chatham County area. At that time, the city never knew that the event would turn into an 18-day happening that would bring in 45,000 patrons and an economic impact of $10 million last year.
The 2007 season kicks off the festival’s 18th year of production, in which the acclaimed British violinist Daniel Hope has taken a big part. Hope is the associate artistic director for the festival until 2009. He performed in the festival’s 2004 and 2005 seasons and says Savannah is “an inspirational and collaborative playground.” The festival does not only give attendees the opportunity to hear great music, it also offers educational workshops for children of all ages. Musical performances range from classical jazz to orchestral and choral works by master composers. This year seems to be the biggest event ever with ticket sales already pushing more than 7,000 and over 20,000 children enrolled in the educational programs. So come out and enjoy the fun during Georgia’s largest music festival this March.
