Checklist for spring planting

•  Make a garden plan. Be sure to include a plot for vegetables.

•  Consider planting new varieties along with your tried-and-true favorites.

•  Take soil samples to your local extension office.

•  Apply fertilizer according to soil-test results and amend soil accordingly.

•  Check your compost pile and make sure it is ready for spring by turning or tumbling it regularly.
