March 2009 Calendar | | Warrior figures from China’s Terracotta Army are on display through April 19 at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. (Photo courtesy High Museum of Art.) |
COMPILED BY JENNIFER J. HEWETT Ancient terracotta legacy Imagine as many as 7,000 terracotta warrior figures, infantrymen, generals and archers, poised for battle during China’s Qin Dynasty. Each life-sized figure, unique in its role and features, were created to assist the First Emperor of China, Qin Shihuangdi, who reigned from 221-210 BC, in the afterlife. One of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, nearly 1,000 have been excavated from the tomb, and you can view some of the figures and more than 100 other works on display at the High Museum’s special exhibition of The First Emperor: China’s Terracotta Army. The exhibit runs through April 19 in Atlanta. For more information, visit high.org or call (404) 766-4444. —Sibongile Lynch
